How Air Force applies the screen

The Air Force adopted the Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) screen in its revised fitness program (January 2026). The Body Composition Assessment (BCA) is a pass/fail component scored against the official body-fat standard (Table 3.2).

The arithmetic behind the gate is worth doing once so the number stops being abstract. A Waist-to-Height Ratio is your waist measurement divided by your height, both in the same unit, so a fixed ratio corresponds to a different waist for every height. At 70 inches tall the Air Force gate of 0.55 means a waist below 38.5 inches, and at 64 inches tall it means a waist below 35.2 inches. That is why a waist figure alone says nothing about whether you pass: the height it is being measured against is half of the calculation.

This gate matches the DoD baseline of 0.55 exactly, so the joint-force standard applies here without local tightening. Measurement technique is the other half of the result. Measure the bare waist at the navel, keep the tape parallel to the floor, do not compress the skin, and read at the end of a normal exhale rather than a held breath. The same person measured with two different techniques can land on either side of the line.

A PASS clears the initial WHtR screen. At or above the gate, the service runs a secondary body-fat evaluation (DoD Instruction 1308.03 corridor: 18–26% men / 26–36% women depending on branch and age). Estimates are educational — confirm with your command.

Secondary body-fat evaluation

If your WHtR is at or above 0.55, the service runs a body-fat evaluation. Maximum allowable body fat for U.S. Air Force:
