What changed

NFPA 1580 (2025) consolidated the former 1581/1582/1583/1584 into one standard and replaced the absolute aerobic threshold (~42 mL/kg/min VO2max) with the ACSM percentile system, age- and sex-adjusted — roughly the 35th–50th percentile for your group.

Why percentiles

A fixed VO2max line penalized older and female candidates regardless of job task. The percentile method scores aerobic capacity against peers of the same age and sex, which is fairer and better predicts job performance.

Training

Train the eight CPAT events plus threshold intervals. The 10:20 clock rewards work capacity; most candidates need 8–12 weeks of weighted stair/carry and interval conditioning.

Quick answers

Is there a body-fat standard for firefighters?
No federal body-fat or WHtR standard. NFPA 1580 requires baseline and annual fitness testing (aerobic capacity, strength, mobility) but leaves thresholds to the department and the ACSM percentile method.
