Different eligibility tests

VA compensation is for service-connected conditions, rated by severity. SSDI is a federal insurance program based on work credits and the inability to engage in substantially gainful activity, regardless of cause.

Do they offset each other?

VA compensation does not reduce SSDI, and SSDI does not reduce VA compensation — they are not offset. (Some other benefits, like SSI or needs-based programs, can be affected by VA income.)

Tax treatment

VA disability compensation is tax-free. SSDI is federally taxable above certain income thresholds when combined with other income.

Quick answers

Can I get both VA disability and SSDI?
Yes. They are separate programs with separate tests and they do not offset each other. Many veterans qualify for both.
