ABCP: Failing, Flagging & the Path Back (2026)
The Army Body Composition Program (AR 600-9) process after a failed screen — from the Day-1 flag to the monthly weigh-ins and the separation risk. Education, not legal advice.
The ABCP timeline
| Point | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Enrollment in ABCP and flagging with Action Code K. The flag blocks promotions, schools, and certain assignments. |
| Day 3 | Soldier is counseled on program requirements and the plan of action. |
| Day 30 | Mandatory meeting with a dietitian or healthcare provider for a personalized plan. |
| Monthly | Progress check: lose 3–8 lbs or 1% body fat per month is “satisfactory progress.” |
| By month 6 | Soldiers must be back in standard or show continuous satisfactory progress; the commander reviews the case. |
| Escalation | Two consecutive months of unsatisfactory progress can lead to administrative separation from the Army. |
Your three ways out of the program
- Pass the WHtR screen at the next assessment — get waist below 0.55 × height.
- Pass the secondary body-fat evaluation — abdominal circumference / age-sex body-fat table (or a supplemental DXA / Bod Pod / InBody result within your age limit).
- Score 540+ on the record ACFT (80+ per event) — the performance-based exemption releases you from the program and lifts the flag.
Note: the 2026 switch to WHtR means many soldiers who would have “busted tape” under the old multi-site method now pass the initial screen. If you fail, your commander will still run the standard counseling and progress plan — but a single DXA-based supplemental assessment can settle a disputed result.
Frequently asked questions
Can I appeal a failed WHtR or tape assessment?
Yes. Under AR 600-9 you may request a supplemental assessment using a DXA scan, Bod Pod, or InBody 770 if reasonably available at your installation. If the supplemental result shows you are within the allowable body-fat percentage for your age and sex, you are considered within standards.
Does a 540 ACFT score get me released from ABCP?
Yes. Soldiers enrolled in ABCP who score 540+ on a record ACFT with 80+ points per event are released from the program (AR 600-9, para 3-13) and their flag is lifted. The exemption must be re-validated at the next record test.
How fast do I need to lose weight in ABCP?
The standard is 3–8 lbs or about 1% body fat per month. Two consecutive months without satisfactory progress can trigger administrative separation.
What is a flag (Action Code K)?
A flag is a commander-directed administrative hold. With Action Code K (body-composition failure) you cannot be promoted, reenlisted, attend professional military education, or be assigned to certain duties until the flag is lifted.
Is body-fat the only way to pass now?
No. The 2026 entry screen is WHtR (< 0.55). If you pass the WHtR screen you are done. If not, the secondary evaluation (abdominal circumference / body-fat % or a supplemental scan) decides, and the 540 ACFT exemption can waive the assessment entirely.
