Sarcopenia Screener (SARC-F)
Sarcopenia - age-related loss of muscle mass and strength - affects mobility and fall risk in older adults and is under-diagnosed. SARC-F is the screening tool recommended by the EWGSOP2 consensus.
How SARC-F works
Five questions cover strength, walking, chair transfer, stair climbing, and falls. Scores of 0-2 each; a total of 4 or more suggests sarcopenia risk and warrants a physical performance assessment with a healthcare provider.
Who should take this screening
Adults 60 and older, anyone with unintentional weight loss, weakness, or slow walking speed, and people with chronic conditions that accelerate muscle loss. Repeat annually if in a risk group.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a score of 4 or more mean?
Per EWGSOP2, SARC-F of 4 or more suggests probable sarcopenia; the next step is confirmatory testing (grip strength, chair-stand, body composition) by a professional. This screener is not a diagnosis.
How can I prevent sarcopenia?
Resistance training 2-3 times per week, adequate protein (roughly 1.2-1.6 g/kg/day for older adults), and vitamin D sufficiency are the evidence-backed pillars.
