Reference-only schedule generator. Two inputs: wake-up time (HH:MM) and desired sleep-cycle count (integer, default N = 5 cycles = 7.5 hours of stage-sleep total, plus 15.5-minute onset latency constant). The tool outputs a sequence of fixed-duration time blocks, back-calculates a bedtime using the 90-minute ultradian-cycle formula, and labels two sets of evenly distributed numerical markers across waking hours: 2-hourly reference time interval markers and 250-milliliter reference-volume ticks. All generated values are purely arithmetic scheduling numbers. Explicit neutral statements are included on every block and marker label.
Reference Planner Inputs
Fixed Block Template, Cycle Formula, and Marker Spacing Rules
This schedule generator is built from a small set of immutable template constants. The primary constant is the 90-minute ultradian sleep cycle duration, derived from polysomnographically documented periodicity in the NREM-REM oscillation (Kleitman 1957 Basic Rest-Activity Cycle framework, Dement & Kleitman 1957 cycle characterization). A sleep-onset latency constant of 15.5 minutes (midpoint of the 14-17 minute documented population-reference interquartile range) is prepended to the first cycle only. Given a user-selected integer cycle count N (3 through 8), total in-sleep duration = (N × 90) + 15.5 minutes. Bedtime is the result of subtracting this total duration from the specified wake-up time. The Sleep block is therefore uniquely input-dependent; all five post-wake blocks follow an unvarying duration template regardless of wake time or cycle count.
Post-wake block durations are fixed integers. The Morning block begins exactly at wake-up time and has a duration of 2 hours. The Midday Meal block follows immediately for exactly 1 hour. The Afternoon block follows the Midday Meal block and spans exactly 4 hours. The Evening Meal block follows for exactly 1 hour. The Wind-down block follows for exactly 1 hour. The arithmetic end of the Wind-down block is cross-checked against the back-calculated bedtime for schedule closure; any residual minute difference arising from rounding is displayed as a note below the block table so the user can observe the pure arithmetic of the 24-hour closure. Because the post-wake sum is 2 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 1 = 9 hours and sleep duration is variable per N, closure arithmetic holds trivially for any N; displayed times are formatted at one-minute precision by rounding.
Movement reference markers are 2-hourly integer clock-time ticks beginning at the wake-up hour and continuing through the waking portion of the day. A marker is emitted for each time T = wake + 2k hours where k is a positive integer and T remains less than or equal to the start of the Wind-down block. Each marker is labeled explicitly as a "reference time interval marker" with the 2-hour spacing interval annotated, and further identified as a standard label used in epidemiological study protocol references for temporal-spacing standard reference. Hydration 250-mL reference ticks are generated by dividing waking duration (24h minus sleep duration) into K equal intervals, where K is chosen to yield an interval between approximately 75 and 105 minutes. The tool computes K = floor(waking_minutes / 90) as a baseline count, then distributes ticks at equal intervals between Wake_time and Wind-down_end. Each tick label explicitly identifies the 250 mL value as a reference volume marker for scheduling use only.
Temporal Spacing References and 90-Minute Cycle Sourcing
The 90-minute ultradian cycle duration applied in the sleep-block back-calculation was first systematically documented through polysomnographic recordings at the University of Chicago in the 1950s. The NREM-REM alternation periodicity, originally reported as approximately 90 minutes in young adult human subjects, was subsequently replicated across multiple cohorts and laboratories, with population mean cycle-length values reported in the range of 85 to 105 minutes depending on age and measurement conditions. Kleitman's BRAC (Basic Rest-Activity Cycle) hypothesis proposed that this same 90-minute physiological oscillator continues to manifest across waking hours as fluctuations in attention, reaction time, and physiological parameters. The BRAC wake-period correlates are cited in this tool only as the source reference for the 90-minute cycle constant used in sleep-block arithmetic; no waking-period oscillation is assumed in the post-wake block template beyond the explicit marker rules above.
Even temporal spacing standards — the underlying principle behind the 2-hourly markers and the evenly spaced hydration ticks — are a standard methodological convention in epidemiological study protocols and repeated-measures experimental designs. In ambulatory assessment methodologies such as ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and experience sampling method (ESM), research protocols commonly specify fixed-interval or equally distributed sampling prompts across the waking day. The 2-hour integer interval is one among several commonly cited temporal spacing conventions in the ambulatory assessment methods literature. Equal-interval tick distributions are also the standard default in any pure scheduler or reference-timetable generator where no preferential weighting of time intervals is specified. Both marker categories on this page therefore inherit their arithmetic structure from generic temporal-spacing reference standards rather than from any health-specific rule. No claim is made that these spacings have any specific association with any health outcome.
