Healthy range

General health: below 0.5 is ideal; 0.5–0.59 signals increased cardiometabolic risk. Military: the 2026 gate is < 0.55 (Marine Corps < 0.52).

Military & first-responder angle

The DoD replaced height-and-weight tables with WHtR effective 2026-01-01. At or above 0.55 triggers a secondary body-fat evaluation. This is now the most consequential single number in military body composition.

Divide your waist circumference in inches by your height in inches. A 70-inch person with a 35-inch waist has a ratio of 0.50.
What is a good WHtR?
Below 0.5 is generally considered healthy. For the U.S. military the pass line is below 0.55; the Marine Corps uses below 0.52.
Is WHtR better than BMI?
WHtR captures central adiposity directly, so it predicts cardiometabolic risk more accurately than BMI in most studies — one reason the DoD adopted it.
