Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

The calories your body burns at rest. The Mifflin–St Jeor equation is the most accurate formula for most adults and the one VivMetric uses.

Educational reference only. The numbers on this page summarize public service regulations for planning purposes. They are not official medical, recruiting, or administrative determinations. Always confirm your status with a recruiter, commanding officer, or hiring agency using the official assessment.

Formula

Mifflin–St Jeor: Men: 10·weight(kg) + 6.25·height(cm) − 5·age + 5 · Women: 10·weight(kg) + 6.25·height(cm) − 5·age − 161

Healthy range

Roughly 1,400–1,900 kcal/day for most adults, varying with size, sex, age, and muscle mass.

Military & first-responder angle

A basic nutrition input for service members in the ABCP or trying to meet body-composition standards — knowing your BMR anchors a realistic deficit (3–8 lbs/month is the Army standard).

Quick answers

Why does the military care about BMR?
ABCP progress requires roughly 3–8 lbs of loss per month; that target is only realistic with a calorie plan anchored to your true BMR.
