BMI vs WHtR vs Body-Fat Percentage: Which Number Matters?
The three metrics compared side by side — what each measures, where each is used in the military in 2026, and the one you should track.

BMI = weight ÷ height² (screening only). WHtR = waist ÷ height (the 2026 military gate). Body-fat % = fat mass estimate (the secondary evaluation). BMI is the weakest of the three for individuals — it cannot see muscle — which is why the military demoted it.
The 2026 hierarchy
For a service member the order of operations is: height-weight screen (BMI proxy) → WHtR < 0.55 (or 0.52 Marines) → body-fat % (secondary) → supplemental DXA/Bod Pod on dispute. Firefighters use NFPA 1580 fitness testing with BMI as a baseline measure, not a gate.
Track this one number
If you track a single metric, make it WHtR. It is stable, needs only a tape, and is the actual pass/fail screen in the military today.

Body Mass Index with the accession context. The Air Force screens roughly BMI 17.5–27.5; the Coast Guard uses 19.0–27.5.
