WHtR Formula
Waist-to-Height Ratio is computed as:
WHtR = waist circumference / height
Both measurements must be in the same unit (inches or centimeters). The ratio is unitless, so the result is identical regardless of which unit system you use.
How to Measure Your Waist
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Place a measuring tape around the narrowest part of your torso — typically just above the navel and below the ribcage. Keep the tape level and parallel to the floor. Breathe normally and measure at the end of a natural exhale. Do not pull the tape tight enough to compress the skin.
NIH WHtR Classification
The National Institutes of Health and international health authorities use WHtR to assess abdominal obesity risk. The 0.5 threshold is consistent across all populations:
