How Lean Body Mass Is Calculated
Lean body mass is a simple derivation from total weight and body fat percentage:
Lean Body Mass (LBM) = Total Weight × (1 − Body Fat % as decimal)
Fat Mass = Total Weight × Body Fat % as decimal
For example, a person weighing 180 lb with 20% body fat has: LBM = 180 × (1 − 0.20) = 180 × 0.80 = 144 lb; Fat Mass = 180 × 0.20 = 36 lb. The two components sum back to total weight: 144 + 36 = 180 lb.
What Lean Body Mass Includes
LBM (or fat-free mass) consists of all body components that are not adipose (fat) tissue:
- Skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle
- Bones, joints, and connective tissue
- Internal organs (liver, kidneys, brain, etc.)
- Body water (intracellular and extracellular)
- Blood, lymph, and other fluids
Note that LBM is not equivalent to "muscle mass." Body water alone typically accounts for 50–60% of total body weight and is part of LBM. Thus, LBM can fluctuate significantly with hydration status even when actual muscle mass is stable.

Limitations and Caveats
The quality of the LBM estimate depends entirely on the accuracy of the body fat percentage entered. Methods such as DXA and hydrostatic weighing carry typical errors of ±2–3 percentage points, while bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and formula-based estimates may have errors of ±3–6 percentage points. A 5-point error in body fat % translates directly to a 5% error in LBM. The calculator is an educational reference and is not a diagnostic tool.
