How the Height-Weight Ratio Is Computed
Two complementary ratios are derived from the same measurements.
- Weight-to-height ratio (lb/in): body weight in pounds divided by height in inches. This tells you how many pounds you carry per inch of stature.
- Height-to-weight ratio (in/lb): the reciprocal — inches of height per pound of body weight.
These ratios are directly proportional to BMI. Since BMI = 703 × weight_lb / height_in², we can rewrite
it as: BMI = 703 × (weight_lb / height_in) / height_in. So the weight-to-height ratio is
simply BMI scaled by height and the 703 conversion factor.

Interpreting the Ratio
The height-weight ratio is a screening tool that can flag potential weight issues without the mathematical step of squaring height. However, it does not account for body composition. Two individuals with identical weight-to-height ratios may have very different body fat percentages — one with substantial lean mass, another with more adipose tissue. For that reason, the ratio should be interpreted alongside BMI, waist circumference, and ideally body composition measurements when available.
